Holiday Gift Guide

Shh, don't tell the Doberman, but this year, he's getting pretty full stocking! Every year, come December, shopping can either be the most stressful thing in the world (Hello, Black Friday) or a labor of love. I like to go for the latter.

But it's very easy to imagine why it's so hard to look for those people in your life that you actually want to shower gifts upon. When it comes to people you don't like so much, it's always easy: get them some candy and a book that they won't read. But your boyfriend? Girlfriend? Best Friend? That's a little bit harder.

And so, my darling 'Bones, I give you....

FOR HIM

Now this is the dilemma I am currently facing: Do you get your boyfriend something practical?

Or, my friends, do you get him something extravagant?

FOR HER

Okay, fellas. This one is a little hard. I'll try not to heavily influence it with what I want.
Now, the practical...

And now...the not-so-practical at all...

And now, the people you're maybe not as intimate with...
The Happy Homeowner

The Old Fashioned

The Rebel

So there you have it, 'Bones. The Honeybee's picks for Winter Holiday Gifts 2011. Stay warm, stay cheerful, and stay cool.

Sincerely,
Cheekbone

My log doesn't judge.

One of the more worrisome things about dressing up for Halloween is having to explain what you are to people. Bravely, The Doberman and I decided to face this head on and go to a party in Echo Park dressed as Audrey Horne and Special Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks.

We took the long trek from the West side of LA to Echo Park where we met up with all sorts of interesting characters, including, but not limited to...
Nicholas Cage from Raising Arizona and either James Dean or Marlon Brando, he didn't know.
Cassandra as a sexy skeleton (but not in the "sexy" way, just...she was), and an accidental Trotsky who is herefore referred to as Spencer.
My gooooorgeous friend Jessica Verdi as the most amazing mermaid I have EVER seen, and her friend as some sort of cat.
See that girl on second to the right? Well, this is where I begin to tell you that she basically made my year. Why? Because she and her boyfriend, who we did not meet before that night, went as the Blue Rose lady and Gordon Cole from Twin Peaks! What a surprise!!

Of course we became friends with Kelsey and Jacob, they were too cool to be true.

But then things got a little crazy. Four Twin Peaks characters? Two groups who don't even know each other? It can't get weirder, right? Wrong. Suddenly, as if from Heaven, comes a girl dressed as The Log Lady.

Too good to be true, indeed.

 Happy Halloween, everyone!

Love,
Cheekbone

Autumnal

Long time no see.

It's October, which to this Honeybee happens to be the best month of the year. There is a different emotion that rides in with October, a possessive spirit which forces one to crave warm spices, crisp golden red apples, honeyed candies, rich colored wools, and the hand of a loved one as you crunch sycamore leaves down a cloudy street.

No other month sends this feeling so thoroughly through my bones, as I'm sure it does yours. For October, the most beautiful month of the year, I bring you Cheekbone's Top Five Everything.

Number one rule of Autumn besides staying warm? Don't be afraid of color! There's so much color during the colder seasons, from the leaves to the sky at sunset to a roaring fireplace--warmth brings life to the gloomy days.

With all the tights you'll be wearing you don't need to worry about the length of your dress or skirt, so why not go a little bit Mod? Remember to keep your shifts ironed so they keep their shape, and don't be shy--show off those legs!
Fall is a perfect season for silks and satins that are opaque or even a little sheer to add depth, dimension, and softness to heavy coats and boots.

Bold prints? Hell yes!! Country plaids, graphic designs, Native American traditional weaves, even old-timey florals can brighten up an outfit and get you out of a wooly rut.
Not that there's anything wrong with being wooly. I say go for it, keep a chunky knit with skinny jeans or tights or layer socks over tights to keep warm and accessorize.

By the way, scarves go really, really well with a nice hat! And don't think you don't have a head for a hat, there's a hat for every one. You just have to look hard enough to find the right one for you!

and now I pass it over to the Doberman for his top choices for men this month...
Fall is the season for the Dapper Man, allowing for incredible layering opportunities. The idea is to go for understated and classic with muted palettes and patterns that don't overwhelm the outfit but add small details.
It's important to make your fall pant selection well fitted to your body type, which doesn't necessarily mean skin-tight, but remembering that you do have a body that jeans should fit to, not hang excessively off. Combining several layers on top shouldn't accompany baggy jeans, even when belted. Also, it's okay to wear socks other than white and black. They show a little, so keep them interesting but still never over the top.
A Dapper Man needs his shoes to match and balance the heartiness of the outfit. If you're wearing a stiff wool blazer it might be a good idea, for instance, to accompany it with harder leather shoes with a slight shine to them.
Without Autumn accessories the outfit can be rendered bland. Keep to warm colored metals and leathers and cloth ties as opposed to cold silky materials and colors to contribute to the warmth of the outfit's palette. Still keeping with the rustic theme, accessories can be unconventional, such as the Bolo Tie, which you can find with hundreds of differing clasps to suit your personal style and taste.
To say that Autumnal men's cologne should be dark and woody is an understatement. All these scents feature a depth of complexity that lends itself to blending effortlessly with wools and leathers, as if you're part of the season.

From left to right top: YSL Rouge Pur Pure Couture Lipstick , NARS Night Series Eyeshadows, TopShop Powder Blush in Pop
On Bottom: Moschino Glamour Perfume, Particuliere Nail Color by Chanel
Remember, Play play play! There's so many other colors besides neutrals and everyone can wear a red lip!

During colder seasons, you usually want to stay inside. To make sure you're not forced into the bitter cold just to find some good grub, try some of these recipes to coat your freezing belly. Just follow the links to delicious happiness!

 1. The Brothers Bloom, easily one of my favorite films. The fashion is inspiring, the characters and well developed and charming, the cinematography is elegant and beautiful, the score is spirited and lovely, and most of all--the plot is original and one that will surely affect you. I promise you should seek it out!!

2. Twin Peaks is one of those shows I almost just don't want to tell you anything about. It's on Netflix, its a classic, and it's amazing.
3. A L'Interieur is by far one of the most frightening horror films I've ever seen. Yes, it's French, and yes there are subtitles but it's so worth it because I firmly believe that, aside from South Korea, the French are leading the Horror genre into new amazing places nobody anywhere else will dare.
4. I cant think of any other film that quite so well captures the emotions of fall and reminds you what it was like to be a child as Return To Oz. It's a cult classic for sure, but as with the Doberman, many childhoods were shaped by this film. It's tragic, beautiful, and delightful all at once, just don't go looking for your technicolor eye-candy Wizard of Oz sequel here.

5. Annie Hall? Dude, of course.

1.  Cults- Abducted

2. Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros - 40 Day Dream
3. Glasvegas - Lonesome Swan

4. Fleet Foxes - Ragged Wood

5. The Kinks - Wicked Annabella

Well thats it from us today! Look forward to when the Honeybee gets her film developed...hopefully.

Sincerely yours,
Cheekbone
